A Future Learning Space to support the education of the children of Kakuma Refugee Camp though facilitating training for teachers.

The following Infographic outlines the project. Pop Up University is designed to meet the need for inclusive, capacity-building training for teachers in Kakuma Refugee Camp. It also outlines the potential partners who will contribute to the Pop Up University. There are many other service providers who could fit into this model, depending on the needs identified by the refugees themselves. Pop Up University is a collator of services; a packager of help; an instant provider of real, further education on the ground. Pop Up University can go anywhere and act as a customisable portal to a world class tertiary education. It can provide support for teachers to continue working whilst studying, through coordinating intensive courses, directed at specific needs, recognised by the Kakuma Refugee Camp teachers themselves.

Pop Up University aims to fill the gaps left behind after visiting experts have come to initiate teacher training. The Pop Up University can be arranged to arrive and be set up following face to face training. The portable buildings can be positioned wherever they will be most useful. They will incorporate their own power supply, ICT connectivity, computers, tablets, mobile phones and other teaching resources. Local mentors will be trained by Pop Up University to put together and use the equipment. They will remain as support staff who can assist teachers as they access the suite of training modules from acredited online universities, and utilise the devices that will operate as a Personal Learning Network to support them in their day to day teaching.

The mentors will walk alongside the teachers as they navigate the Liminal Space of such a new way of learning. They will walk them through the skills required to access and thrive within the E-Space that now becomes their own university. They will be the caretakers of the Physical Learning space that is the Pop Up University.

Pop Up University will curate units of work from different tertiary institutions so that they are easy to access and quick to complete. Some of these may involve entry level courses such as English language acreditation. Some may provide basic ICT skills. Some of the units of work will be directly related to the curriculum requirements for the schools in Kakuma Refugee Camp.

Let's see how it fits together...
